John McCain, R-Ariz. spent 5 years as a POW and has 7 children, one of whom just joined the Marines. I'd say that's doing pretty well. I'd like to see Rudy Giuliani run though. At this point, we need somebody who knows how to police a large city, Baghdad.

Met a man from Cairo today. Cairo, IL that is. Put me in mind of the grandiose Texan humor to have towns named 'Paris,' 'Athens.' I don't know if you know this, but the one state in the world where Neanderthals have the right of return is Texas. We try to signal that with our town names. Also put me in mind of Jim McMahon. He was several years older than most of a group of friends I hung out with on Portsmouth Street before I was deported. Remember riding around on bikes one day with him, the freshman philosopher, teaching that 'Every dog has his day!' He did become a philosophy teacher at Southern Illinois University, history of ideas, and got teacher of the year award. He got the 'crucify you award' the next year, was fired. He was working then as a motorcycle mechanic that year I talked to him and, ever the philosopher psychologist, said, 'You change your group of friends.'

Guiliani, huh? I think it's going to be McCain, b/c I can't imagine who else is going to emerge, but I'm no expert on who the Republicans should run in 08

Deegan also competed Friday night in the best trick event at the Staples Center, finishing eighth of 10.
Travis Pastrana won the event by becoming the first to complete a double back flip in competition. It was his sixth gold medal and 10th medal in the X Games since 1999.

For now, Deegan is the healthier of the two, with no serious recent injuries. Metzger had sustained four concussions during the past two months.
He said that “riding bikes is living with pain.”

In 2004, Metzger lost a testicle after crashing during a jump, and during his career, he has also broken his back three times.

Metzger said there was entertainment value in watching someone get hurt. “People love to see people crash,” he said.

Deegan has even had a brush with death. Last year, while performing a back flip, he crashed and ended up losing four pints of blood and a kidney.

In the ambulance on the way to the hospital, he was asked if he had any last words he wanted to relay to his wife.
He said he told himself:
I’m not going to die. I’ve got my chick at home, two kids.

I forgot:
"LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 — One has lost a kidney and broken a leg and both wrists; the other has broken arms and legs and lost a testicle.

Watching them perform, many observers wonder whether they have lost their minds.

Doug, I'm not sure how this story of a Hizbolllah training cadre fits into the flow of this blog. I'll work on it though. Maybe we are going to see some really weird sh- in Baghdad?
